Description : Five words from personal experience -- the best breakfast cafe ever. Ranging from the soft pancakes to the classic eggs benedicts, there is no dish that you wouldn't like from this "hole in the wall" breakfast/lunch joint. The view is brilliant from the restaurant, as it overlooks Kalama Beach Park across the road. Their oversize coffee mug proudly standing in our kitchen makes me smile whenever I take a gulp from it in the cold and dreary NY morning.

Description : If you are looking for a quick meal before or after a flight, Kahului Ale house is a solid option right next to the airport. It is a sports bar with nearly seventy TVs so don't expect it to be quiet, particulalry during a football game or even during a 3pm-6pm happy hour. There are three dozen beers on tap and menu covers all the typical bar food choices and then some -- appetizers ranging from nachos to buffalo wings, mains ranging from pizzas to sandwiches and burgers and steaks.

Description : "Mexican with Mautitude" -- Maui tacos has locations in three unassuming strip malls around the island but still turns out some of the best Mexican street food this side of the Pacific. Their tacos, enchiladas, and the guac are delivered with a speed of light by the friendly staff.

Description : Good burgers in a great Front street location with open air, friendly staff, and simple but pleasant music and decor. If you are tired of eating fish and want some red meat, their burgers (which can be a bit on the greasy/fatty side), hit the right spot...It can get a bit crowded, the wait can be a bit long...but nothing to lose sleep over.

Description : Throwing a curve ball in the mix of cuisines on the island, Pita Paradise is a great option for Greek/Italian Mediterranean food. The owner Johnny is a fisherman so always expect to have his grilled fresh catch of the days on the menu with chopped mixed greens and tossed w/ tomatoes, onions, cucumber, olives, feta, and creamy vinaigrette. Some of the best dishes on Pita Paradise's menu are chicken parm, hummus, lamb kebab, and baklava ice cream cake. They have an outdoor patio to compliment a plain white dining room.

Description : "The pandemic may have changed the personality of this place," however it didn't change their legendary taste. Monkeypod's wide ranging menu covers Upcountry Hawaiian classics like Kalua pork and kiawe-grilled ahi, as well as appetizers (pupus) like poke tacos and lobster deviled eggs together with fresh-tossed pizzas. This restaurant cum bar happy hour (from 3:30pm - 5:00 p.m.) is legendary for the food and drinks obsessed crowd.

Both food and wine menus consist of usual crowd-pleasers: Banana’s Foster pancakes and egg beneditcs for brunch; Angus beef, Hawaiian short rib, and mahi mahi for dinner; wine list covering Napa Valley cabernets, New Zealand sauvignon blancs and French bubblies (Bollinger, Taittinger, Dom Perignon).

Description : Quality, reasonably priced sushi with 50% early bird specials and bold, vibrant flavors. Their signature ahi sashimi consists of fresh-caught raw ahi, wrapped in arugula and spinach, rolled in panko crumbs, and flash-fried and served with soy wasabi butter sauce. The seared foie gras nigiri is a creamy, rich foie gras in a sushi roll, served with a mango glaze. Traditionalists would be disappointed here.

Description : This oceanfront bistro in the middle of Front Street is so close to the water that you can almost touch the waves. It is great for ordering appetizers/pupus family style to share and splitting mains like the seared ahi or scallops, grilled steaks or Huli Huli chicken.

Description : This downtown Lahaina upscale bistro has consistently been one of the top restaurants on the island since it is opening over three decades ago. The contemporary design is pleasing without being daring. So are the dishes - ranging caviar deviled eggs to kona coffee roasted colorado rack of lamb to road to hana chocolate cake.


19. Papa'aina at the Pioneer Inn

Description : Chef Anne Wong of the Top Chef fame runs Papa’aina at the oldest hotel in Maui (Pioneer Inn) featuring brunch with local, Maui grown and raised ingredients. The menu runs from traditional breakfast favories (e.g., french toast and omelettes) to mild Hawaiian influences (e.g., macadamia pancakes) to full on Hawaiian dishes (ahi poke bowl, lillikoi cake) to Asian and pacific influenced dishes (e.g., ramen, mapo moco). While there are no reservations and service could be on a leasurely side, you can use Yelp waitlist feature to snag a seat on one of the terrasses.

Description : Fresh baked Hawaiian cookies, gourmet ice cream sandwiches made to order, Roeselani ice cream, and the best shave ice on the island -- need we say more? The store is next to the Hawaii Ocean Center in Maalaea so you can visit it if you are there or if you are travelling between Wailea and Kaanapali (Maalea is a about half way in between the two towns).

Description : This bakeshop focuses on exotic specialties ranging from Portugese malasadas to Japanese manju and mochi to Hula pies and everything in between. It has been around since the 1960s and is great for an early breakfast pastry or specially ordered cakes as well.

Description : Leoda's is a tiny diner in Olowalu right next to Ukumehame Beach Park which has some of the best surf for new and intermediate students. The owners call their cusine glorified grandma comfort food and eating there you wish that grandma was still around -- handcrafted sandwiches on served on freshly-baked bread, fresh salads are made with greens from local farms, their sweet (strawberry) and savory (chicken pot) pies are to die for!

Description : Sale Pepe is a cozy Italian bistro with a highly curated menu of cold cuts (e.g., salumis and cheeses), small plates (e.g., bruschetta, liver crostini) and house made fresh pasta and pizzas and with wines and drinks to accompany. Their key ingredients — the flour, mozzarella, San Marzano tomatoes, and olive oil — are all imported directly from Italy by the couple running this delightful restaurant: Qiana (from Red Hook, Brooklyn) and Michele (from Rozzano, Milan).

Description : Leilani's is our favorite restaurant in Whaler's Village -- it is an airy, sprawling space right on Kaanapali Beach, offering the perfect vantage point for viewing sunsets framed by amazing shorelines of Lanai and Molokai. Leilani's consists of a beachside grill with the lanai (terrace) serving more casual bites (e.g., burgers, fish tacos, ahi poke) with tropical drinks and drafts and a proper restaurant with the menu ranging from lobster tails to Double R ranch file mignon and prime rib.
