LIMITED EDITION: The Easter Story
The story of Easter has inspired some of the most beautiful and moving paintings ever produced in Western Art. Drawn from the four Gospels and associated legends, the stories of Christ’s passion, crucifixion and resurrection have been re-told in paint throughout the centuries and were central in religious devotion.
The National Gallery, London, holds a superb collection of Old Master Paintings retelling the Easter story. Works by Raphael, Velasquez, Michelangelo, Rembrandt and Caravaggio vividly retell elements of The Passion from Gethsemane to Calvary to Emmaus. Familiar stories are retold and obscure symbols explained. A biography of each artist will introduce some memorable characters and we will discuss each painting within the context of the development of European Art from the Italian 15th century, though the Renaissance and beyond.
